Onions (and garlic) come in a range of colours and shapes, with white ones being milder in taste. Onions are easy to grow, but need about six-months growth time from sowing to harvest.
You can grow onions from seed, or seedling. They can grow in pots but do better in the garden. Plant in Spring (for an Autumn harvest).
When you plant them, space them at about 5-10 cm apart. As the bulb develops the tops will protrude through the soil. They grow well with carrots, beetroot, shallots, garlic, silver beet, lettuce and greens.
The leaves will start dying off and wilting when they are ready. Pull up the bulbs and hang them out in a dry place for a couple of weeks. Store in a cool and dry place.
