This information applies to most root vegetables, including but not limited to, carrots, parsnips and turnips.
Root vegetables need to be planted in well-drained soil, which is free of rocks and other plant roots (to avoid funny-looking veg).
Plant from seed (they don’t transfer well). Place the seeds in a trench in the soil, about 2cm down. Water well and cover with a light mulch. They should start to sprout in about 3 weeks. Thin them out when they get about 5 cm high.
They should be ready to pull within 8 weeks. Remove them all by week 16, for optimum taste.
