Thyme is a great addition to any herb garden, and makes a lovely border plant.

You can get a number of varieties of thyme and I recommend the common and lemon varieties for those starting a herb garden.

Thyme plants like full sun and well-drained soil. You can grow it in the garden and in pots. It likes a little bit of slow release fertiliser added in.

You can plant from seed or seedling/cutting, preferably in early Spring. After the first year of growth give it a bit of a prune to get rid of the woody bits, and then prune each year in early Spring.

Thyme can be used either fresh or dried and can be used for both culinary and medicinal purposes.
