Borage is easy to grow and has a lovely star-shaped blue flower. It is a great addition to your garden if you want to attract bees. It grows readily from seed or seedlings. Plant in late winter/early spring.

It will grow almost anywhere but is happiest with well-drained soil and in full sun. It is inclined to wander (as in take over beds) so consider this before planting it in the ground. It’s a bit prickly, so garden gloves are a must.

You can eat the flowers and leaves (tastes like cucumber). You can freeze the flowers in ice cubes to make an attractive garnish for drinks, and borage is a popular addition to Pimms Cups (cocktails).
