Blueberries

Plant blueberries from late Autumn to early Spring. You will be sold a bare-rooted, dormant plant.

Plant in a freely draining, acidic, and preferably sandy soil. You will need to fertilise it well, using plenty of compost and organic fertiliser. Blueberries grow best in full sun, and need regular watering. But they are fussy and do better with drip watering rather than soaking with a hose.

Blueberry plants can grow up to 2m high and 1.5m wide.

Blueberries begin cropping at two years, so be patient Depending on the variety, it will fruit from mid-Summer or early Autumn. Don’t pick the berries until they are really dark blue, and taste before picking.
