Ivy (Hedera)is an evergreenclimbing or ground-creeping, woody plant. It is an attractive plant and looks lovely on brick walls and buildings. It grows readily from seed or cutting and lives happily in sun or shade. It grows well in containers and in beds.
It does not require extensive watering or fertilizing and grows in almost any soil (as long as it is not overly damp).
You will need to prune it regularly and to ensure that it doesn’t strangle and/or crowd out other plants.
If you decide to grow ivy then I recommend you consult your local plant nursery to ensure that you have a non-invasive variety. Ivy is considered a pest in most states of Australia and you may be limited in what you can plant/buy.
